Review Summary & Conclusion

The Osprey Sirrus 24 Women’s Pack is a classically designed daypack with modern enhancements for breathability and maximum organization

Built out of super burly 210D nylon fabric, the Sirrus 24 is designed to handle whatever you throw at it. With an Airspeed suspension back panel made of mesh, the Sirrus 24 is also one of the best backpacks in its category for ventilation. This really helps reduce the amount of moisture buildup on your back during a hot hiking day, which is perfect for people who sweat a lot on the up-trail. This extra ventilation is also great for people who like to move quickly uphill during high-octane activities or even on trail runs when you need to carry some extra gear.

Plus, if you spend a lot of time hiking in rainy environments as I do, you’ll also really enjoy the integrated rain cover on this pack. The Sirrus 24 comes with a purpose-built rain cover that can be tucked away into a storage pocket when not in use. This helps prevent the rain cover from blowing away in the wind and also helps keep your gear dry in foul weather – an added bonus even if you’re using this pack just for walking around town!

Other great features include plentiful organization options. The Sirrus 24 has a variety of different pouches and pockets to help you keep your stuff organized on the trail. Some of these pouches, like the zippered hip-belt pockets, are also great for storing gear, such as a compass, that you need to have accessible on a hike.

That being said, no piece of gear is perfect. I felt that this pack fell short in a number of areas, particularly when it comes to overall weight. At a whopping 41 oz (1.16 kg), the Sirrus 24 is by no means light, and, in fact, it’s one of the heavier daypacks in its size range on the market. But, if you prioritize comfort and ventilation over everything else, then the Sirrus 24 might be the pack for you!

How We Got The Results

Comfort

The Sirrus 24 gets mixed reviews on comfort. While it comes with some serious padding on the shoulder straps, the hip-belt – although seamless – doesn’t seem to have nearly as much padding for carrying loads.

That being said, the pack’s mesh back panel and Osprey’s proprietary Airspeed Suspension allows the pack to breathe well and keeps air circulating even when you’re working hard. This really makes a difference when you’re working hard hiking uphill and can help prevent the dreaded sweaty back!

Plus, what I really loved is that the pack is that it has an adjustable torso length. Thus, if you start hiking and find that the hip-belt starts riding up above your waist, you can simply stop to adjust the back panel to be anywhere from 15-19 in (38-48 cm).

Weight

At 41oz (1.16 kg) the Sirrus 24 isn’t really an ultralight pack. Sure, it’s lighter than an urban school bag, but since it has a mesh back panel for added ventilation, the Sirius also needs to have a steel frame to support any load the pack is carrying. This adds some substantial weight to the overall design.

Thus, unless you really hate having a sweaty back or tend to carry a substantial amount of gear on day hikes and shorter adventures, it might be worth considering a lighter pack.

Versatility

This pack is mostly designed to be a day hiking backpack. Although it has some nice added features, like ice ax loops, its relatively small size would prevent it from being used on any substantial overnight trips or any day-long mountaineering adventures.

However, the Sirrus 24 also has some cool organizing features, like a cell-phone holder on the shoulder strap and the many top and side pockets, which also make it great for traveling.

Build Quality & Durability

Osprey is known for making quality backpacks and the Sirrus 24 is no exception. This pack is made with high-quality materials, including a 210 denier nylon fabric for the body. Denier is a measurement of weight in fabrics and is mostly correlated with the fabric’s strength. For comparison, many similar daypacks use 100D nylon, which is not nearly as durable against rocks and debris on the trail.

The features on the Sirrus 24 are also made with high-quality materials, but it’s important to keep in mind that added features and higher denier nylon increase the overall weight of the pack. This, we often find that there is a tradeoff between weight and durability/build quality in backpacks.

FAQ – Osprey: Sirrus 24

While one could use the Sirrus 24 for trail running, it’s a bit large and cumbersome for the activity. Instead, trail runners should seek out purpose-built daypacks with harness systems designed to keep the pack from bouncing around as they run.

The Sirrus 24 has Osprey’s proprietary trekking pole storage system, which makes it easy to quickly stash your poles for a rocky scramble or snack break.

This backpack is not made with waterproof fabrics, but it comes with a purpose-built integrated rain cover that can be stashed away in a dedicated storage pouch when it’s not in use. If you don’t like your gear getting wet, use the pack liner inside the bag.

Since the Sirrus 24 has a variety of different organizational pockets, it actually makes for a pretty good pack for carrying around town. It doesn’t have a dedicated laptop pocket, but if you can only bring one backpack with you on a trip, the Sirrus can easily double as a day hike and in-town pack.
